NAHB Remodeler of the Month

Dave Jackson, president of Jackson Design Build, believes that success in remodeling comes down to finding the right clients.

“Sometimes it’s more important to know which jobs or customers to avoid and not work with,” Jackson says. “If you have red flags, pay attention to them. Don’t be afraid to pass on a customer—even if you need the revenue.”

Q&A with Dave Jackson, Jackson Design Build

Qualified Remodeler (QR): Who started your company?
DJ: David Jackson.

QR: When and how did you choose this career?
DJ:
I started in construction as a carpenter in 1978.

QR: What did you do before becoming a remodeler?
DJ: I worked in siding, framing, concrete, and shotcrete. I also built swimming pools and worked as a construction superintendent and custom home builder.

QR: What motivates you every day?
DJ: I get to do what I’ve always wanted—build and renovate homes. I also get to work alongside my son to grow this company.

QR: What does being part of NAHB Remodelers mean to you?
DJ: It’s important to know your market and your peers. Within the Home Builders Association, we share information, refer work, and support one another. The NAHB and local HBA programs give us the tools to become leaders in our industry. Being part of these organizations exposes our team to knowledge and opportunities we might not learn otherwise.

QR: Is your current focus more on growth or steady revenue at greater profitability?
DJ: Our goal is to strengthen our new home construction business while maintaining remodeling as an important part of our operations. Each year, we build between five and ten new homes and complete two to three major renovation projects valued at $350,000 or more, often for repeat clients.
We also devote our skills to the Home Builders Foundation, completing over 75 accessibility projects annually at no cost to families in need. This initiative allows individuals with disabilities to remain in their homes and live more independent lives.

QR: What is your number one source of leads right now, and why is it working?
DJ: Referrals, referrals, referrals.

QR: What is the most unusual project your company has completed?
DJ: The period-sensitive renovation of a 19th-century castle in Denver.

QR: Where do you go to look for solutions and ideas for your business?
DJ: We lean on the network we’ve built through the Home Builders Association. It provides education, networking, and resources to help our business thrive. We’re also exploring membership in the NAHB Builder 20 Club to expand our collaboration with leading firms nationwide.

QR: How has the remodeling profession changed since you’ve been involved?
DJ: The biggest change is in the clients. Many are internet-savvy and come with expectations shaped by inaccurate online information. It’s become essential to educate clients about real-world timelines, costs, and complexity. I spend time identifying clients who value quality and long-term craftsmanship over simply getting a “good deal.”

QR: What is the best advice you’ve received in your career?
DJ: Know when to say no. Avoid jobs or clients that compromise your integrity or quality standards.

QR: Any final thoughts on your accomplishments or philosophy?
DJ: Two guiding principles keep us focused:

  1. The customer always comes first — without the customer, we have no business.
  2. Always do the right thing, even if it hurts.
